20 Film & TV Remakes You Didn't Know Were Coming

The future will be full of the past.

Now more than ever, the movie industry is relying on a constant stream of reboots and remakes both creatively and commercially. In 2025, three of the top ten grossing films were remakes in Lilo and Stitch, How to Train Your Dragon, and Superman, with The Fantastic Four: First Steps falling just short of a top ten spot, and Wuthering Heights is right now leading the way in a still very young 2026.

While it may not be the most popular move with cinema-goers the world over, this has become something of a staple and a cornerstone of the entire market.

Things don't look likely to change either, with plenty more reboots on the horizon. Some of these are incredibly high profile, with a new Batman coming to the DCU in The Brave and the Bold, as well as the likes of Masters of the Universe and The Bride. This also tracks on the small screen, but while many of these have been widely publicised, there are others that may have gone somewhat under the radar.

Films at the height of the horror and western genres will be reimagined, as well as comic book characters, detectives, and of course Disney princesses, and more.

20. The Exorcist

If you're looking for the most iconic, influential, terrifying, and controversial horror film of all time, The Exorcist has to be near the top of the list for every category. William Friedkin's 1973 outing was a genuine game changer, it was utterly unique, and is still relevant to this day.

Like many in the genre, the film proved popular enough to sprout sequel after sequel, with exactly none of them being anywhere near as good as the original. Not even in the same league, which could also be said for the TV series.

In 2027 will come a new direction for the franchise which will see it rebooted. While nothing anybody could do will possibly recapture the same lightning in a bottle as in 1973, if there is one man that has the best shot, it is Mike Flanagan.

Flanagan has become something of a horror legend in a relatively short span of time, helping to create the likes of The Haunting of Hill House and others, as well as an upcoming series rebooting another legendary horror story, Carrie. While The Exorcist is a different beast altogether, Flanagan alongside Scarlett Johansson just may be the ones to do it justice. Or, inevitable comparisons to the original will doom it to being forgotten at best.
