20 Movies So Good You Ignore Huge Plot Holes
5. The Wizard Of Oz - Dorothy Could've Used The Ruby Slippers At Any Time
The Wizard of Oz is an enchanting and visually bewitching technicolour dream that's so joyous, funny, and charming that it's difficult not to love, although there are actually a few things you might find yourself wishing to set to one side in order to fully embrace it. Alongside all the horrible behind-the-scenes horror stories, which do leave an air of sadness hanging over the whole enterprise now, there's also something that could've resolved the entire story in five minutes.
The ruby slippers that Dorothy (Judy Garland) wears throughout the film could've gotten her home at any time, as the ending shows. She didn't need to go and see the Wizard of Oz at all. Therefore, why didn't Glinda the Good Witch (Billie Burke) tell her this immediately? Dorothy nearly died on her journey multiple times, after all.
One could theorize that Glinda was playing some sort of long game in order to defeat the Wicked Witch of the West (Margaret Hamilton), but there's nothing in the movie itself to suggest this. So yes, this is a plot hole, but if Dorothy had used the ruby slippers immediately, we wouldn't have gotten one of the most beloved movies of all time. Therefore, a little narrative incoherence is a small price to pay!
