20 Movies So Good You Ignore Huge Plot Holes

18. Carry-On - The Atrocious Airport Security

Carry-On is another one of those deliriously entertaining action films that, despite its undeniable flaws, just works. It takes the brilliant double-act of Taron Egerton and Jason Bateman (playing against type superbly as a sociopathic terrorist) and places them at the heart of a twisty, endlessly entertaining action thriller that just keeps building the tension up and up to sky-high levels. It's a Christmas action picture you could mention in the same sentence as Die Hard without it sounding insulting, in other words.

Due to its sheer entertainment value, it's easy enough to suspend your disbelief, which is what this movie definitely requires, as it is all rather ludicrous. For example, the airport depicted seems to have absurdly lax security. They only partly close it down in the face of a bomb threat, and even though guns are fired many times, no-one is seen reacting to this.

To give another example, a key part of the plot is baggage handler Ethan (Taron Egerton) being forced to let a dangerous package through without telling anyone, but there was a way out of this situation. He could've gone into the toilet to send for help, as the public toilets don't have CCTV.

Like many other action movies before it, Carry-On relies on not-always-believable plotting in order to propel its thrills, and unlike the genre's weaker efforts, it delivers its plot with enough panache and skill to make its leaps in logic easily forgivable.
