It may be one of the most popular properties in the history of gaming, but could anyone have predicted just how much success the Super Mario Bros. franchise would enjoy right off the bat? Over $2 billion across two films is a staggering return.

The storytelling may not be the greatest, but it has given its devoted fandom everything it could want. Fun albeit straightforward plots, beautiful, colourful animation, and more Easter eggs than you could likely ever hope to find. It has also given the potential for so much more to come.

Though The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has, at the time of writing, fallen short of what its predecessor managed, $847 million is a huge intake, and with the path being set out for more, Illumination is sure to greenlight multiple further projects.
