8. Christopher Nolan Apparently Did Not Have A Thing For Superheroes - Except For One
If youre noticing a dearth of influences on Nolans part from other superhero films, theres a reason for that: Nolan didnt much care for the Burton/Schumacher series of Batman films although hes complimented the 1989 Tim Burton film for being extraordinary and visionary, hes also confessed that it wasnt Batman and if interviews are to be believed he hasnt paid much attention to the huge boom of superhero movies of recent years. The one superhero movie that did intrigue Nolan was Richard Donners 1978 Superman: The Movie; Nolan has stated that that films use of epic casting (Gene Hackman, Glenn Ford, Marlon Brando, Trevor Howard, Terrence Stamp), its scale and scope, and its treatment of a definitive origin story for its central character were hugely inspirational when writing Batman Begins. I felt like there was a version of Batman that never got made in 1979, said Nolan in the print version of the Batman Begins screenplay; it seems odd that they didnt do Batman in that same way with the same epic sensibility.
