These horror movies probably aren't what you think.

Horror is a film genre of endless possibility, for while many horror flicks paint within incredibly familiar lines, it can also be a wide-open sandbox for filmmakers to unleash their most uniquely twisted visions upon unsuspecting audiences.

It's always fun to watch a horror film that skirts expectations and does something just about nobody ever anticipated, and with that in mind these 20 upcoming offerings all seem primed to do just that.

You may think you've got a decent idea of what to expect from these films, but from a little reading between the lines and scouring some online chatter, it seems like they might actually end up surprising us all.

From contentious adaptations that may turn out better than you think to dubious sequels fighting to win the franchise's good name back and everything else in-between, these films all might do something nobody sees coming.

If of course remains to be seen if that's genuinely the case and whether these choices actually end up landing with audiences, but in the very least it seems like they're trying to do something different...

20. Resident Evil

There was much excitement when Barbarian and Weapons director Zach Cregger was announced to be helming a new Resident Evil movie, though that was swiftly stymied by Cregger's swift admission that he would be creating a standalone story that exists in the world of the video games with an entirely new cast of characters.

For fans desperate to finally see Resident Evil done full justice on screen by a visionary genre filmmaker, it was undeniably disappointing that Cregger's film would seemingly be Resident Evil In Name Only.

But for one, Cregger has certainly earned some goodwill off the back of his first two horror films, and from what we've seen in the trailer, it looks like his take on Resident Evil is going to be a white-knuckle, blisteringly intense survival horror experience.

So what if it doesn't have Leon Kennedy or a ton of wink-wink invocations of video game lore?

If Cregger can capture the tone of the series by tapping into its fundamentally grim absurdity - something he's proven himself extremely adept at so far - then it'll be tough to care too much about how little interest it has in translating the games verbatim.

Basically, fans who complained about the trailer not being Resident Evil enough just might end up eating crow a few months from now.
