20 Upcoming Horror Movies That Might Surprise You
20. Resident Evil
There was much excitement when Barbarian and Weapons director Zach Cregger was announced to be helming a new Resident Evil movie, though that was swiftly stymied by Cregger's swift admission that he would be creating a standalone story that exists in the world of the video games with an entirely new cast of characters.
For fans desperate to finally see Resident Evil done full justice on screen by a visionary genre filmmaker, it was undeniably disappointing that Cregger's film would seemingly be Resident Evil In Name Only.
But for one, Cregger has certainly earned some goodwill off the back of his first two horror films, and from what we've seen in the trailer, it looks like his take on Resident Evil is going to be a white-knuckle, blisteringly intense survival horror experience.
So what if it doesn't have Leon Kennedy or a ton of wink-wink invocations of video game lore?
If Cregger can capture the tone of the series by tapping into its fundamentally grim absurdity - something he's proven himself extremely adept at so far - then it'll be tough to care too much about how little interest it has in translating the games verbatim.
Basically, fans who complained about the trailer not being Resident Evil enough just might end up eating crow a few months from now.
