20 Recent Box Office Bombs EVERYONE Saw Coming

12. A Big Bold Beautiful Journey

Kogonada's new film A Big Bold Beautiful Journey was one of last year's most predictable box office busts, given that it was an expensive entry into a genre with limited commercial prospects at the best of times.

A $45 million romantic fantasy film that isn't based on a best-selling book is a tough sell even when the critical reception is strong, but when the reviews are mixed-to-negative? Not a chance.

On top of this Sony clearly didn't have much faith in it per the film's low-key, wishy-washy marketing campaign, in addition to reports of numerous disastrous test screenings.

Ultimately A Big Bold Beautiful Journey grossed just $20.2 million, once again proving that you can't bank on even actors as beloved as Colin Farrell and Margot Robbie if the material doesn't connect or the chemistry isn't there.

Kogonada's film certainly has its defenders and seems destined for cult status in the years to come, but for most it seemed to be a big swing and a miss.
