7. Greenland 2: Migration

The Gerard Butler-starring apocalyptic thriller Greenland grossed $52.3 million worldwide - an impressive figure against its $35 million budget considering that it hit cinemas in December 2020, bang in the middle of the pandemic.

Between this and the film's estimated VOD grosses of $30 million, it was firmly in the black, enough that a sequel was greenlit the next year.

And Greenland 2: Migration finally released back in January, yet there were a few obvious factors working against this one.

For starters, making audiences wait five years for a follow-up to the first film's intriguing sequel setup was ill-advised, as was the decision to give the film an outrageous $90 million budget.

And so to date Greenland 2 sits at just $41.4 million worldwide - lower than the first film, which was released in a decidedly trickier, pandemic-affected theatrical environment.

It further didn't help that the sequel also received mixed reviews from critics and general audiences, many feeling that it failed to pay off the first film's enticing ending.
