Though Darren Aronofsky's new Guy Ritchie-esque crime caper Caught Stealing was generally well-reviewed, it's also precisely the sort of modest, mid-budget movie that struggles to make much bank at the box office these days.

In recent years audiences have been conditioned to watch these more reigned-in, spectacle-free movies at home and generally only leave the house for more splashy, big-budget events. 

Frankly it's an achievement that Aronofsky's film landed a theatrical release at all rather than just being sold off to a streamer.

As a result it wasn't surprising that the $65 million film grossed just $32.5 million globally.

Given that Ritchie himself is struggling to spin his signature crime comedy formula into reliable commercial success these days, did Aronofsky ever really stand a chance?

In the very least Caught Stealing feels like a film destined to have a long tail on streaming, which should help cushion the massive bath Sony took on it theatrically.
