20 Recent Box Office Bombs EVERYONE Saw Coming
17. Crime 101
Crime 101 pretty much felt like it came out of nowhere, sliding into cinemas back in February with a relatively muted marketing campaign.
More to the point, even if you saw the trailer, there's a good chance you dismissed it as a generic Heat knock-off that you'd maybe catch on streaming someday.
But under the ever-reliable filmmaker Bart Layton, Crime 101 scored strongly positive reviews from critics. Still, with the review embargo lifting just two days before release, the marketing team had little chance to capitalise upon it.
And so, it's not remotely surprising that the film has only barely grossed half of its $90 million budget at the time of press, with there being no chance of it turning a profit theatrically.
While Crime 101 will probably perform well enough on streaming, the eye-wateringly large budget - apparently the going rate for a star-studded mid-budget genre film these days - was just too high to support a theatrical success.
