20 Incredible Recent Movies That FLOPPED

4. The Rivals of Amziah King

The Rivals of Amziah King is the terrific new crime thriller from The Vast of Night filmmaker Andrew Patterson, and though it's received rave reviews ever since its SXSW premiere more than 18 months ago, the film largely fell upon deaf ears during its recent theatrical bow.

While its production budget hasn't been publicly revealed, the Matthew McConaughey-starring thriller cracked barely $3 million during its run - a disastrous result for a film that had serious awards hype once upon a time.

It didn't help that the movie was released in barely 600 cinemas in North America, and because nobody stepped in to distribute it, financier Black Bear ended up doing it themselves - despite their lack of success in that area to date.

Combine this with generally poor marketing and some of the film's more polarising - but brilliantly bold - choices, and The Rivals of Amziah King seems like a film destined to be rediscovered as a cult gem over the next few decades.
