3. Dust Bunny

The directorial debut of Hannibal's Bryan Fuller is one of the strangest and most strikingly creative releases of the past year - a beautifully bonkers fantasy action flick starring Mads Mikkelsen as a hitman who is recruited by an eight-year-old girl (Sophie Sloan) to kill the monster that apparently ate her family.

Beyond the superb chemistry between Mikkelsen and young co-star Sophie Sloan, Fuller's bewilderingly genre-bending romp is a visual feast, touting Oscar-worthy production design, creature effects, and cinematography.

And though Dust Bunny was widely praised by critics, it sank like a stone commercially, grossing just $1.4 million globally, even with Mikkelson leading the charge.

Now, there are a few obvious factors working against this one. Above all else, it was a tough film to market considering it didn't cling to one clear genre, instead combining fantasy, horror, action, and comedy into a tougher-to-quantify whole.

On top of this it was R-rated, and considering it landed in barely 400 North American cinemas, the film was clearly sent out to die by Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions.
