20 Recent Box Office Flops Everyone Saw Coming
3. Greenland 2: Migration
Though 2020's Gerard Butler-starring apocalyptic thriller Greenland grossed "just" $52.3 million against its $35 million budget, that was a laudable achievement considering it was sent to cinemas in December 2020 at one of the pandemic's highest peaks.
This performance coupled with estimated VOD grosses of $30 million prompted a sequel to be swiftly greenlit, and Greenland 2: Migration finally hit cinemas back in January.
Yet it was easy to predict box office calamity for a few reasons - first and foremost, it arrived more than five years after the original, ensuring the filmmakers were categorically striking when the iron was lukewarm-at-best.
Then there's the sequel's outrageously high $90 million budget, ensuring it likely needed to gross upwards of $180 million to be profitable.
Combine this with mediocre reviews and a distinctly different post-pandemic theatrical environment, and it's no surprise that Greenland 2 topped out at a pitiful $44.8 million.
Needless to say, you shouldn't expect a Greenland 3 any time soon - or ever, probably.
