20 Recent Box Office Flops Everyone Saw Coming
2. Supergirl
Even though James Gunn's Superman reboot was a solid box office success to the tune of $618.7 million last summer, that did little to quell doubts about the commercial prospects of follow-up Supergirl.
For one, many felt that Gunn probably should've succeeded Superman with a more popular mainstay superhero like, say, Wonder Woman, unaided by a marketing blitz which largely made the film feel like an ersatz "we have James Gunn at home" exercise.
Couple this with a fairly mixed response to Supergirl's cameo in Gunn's film, reports on the eve of this movie's release that it struggled through post-production, and mediocre reviews, and there seemed to be little hope for the film turning a profit on its $186 million budget.
Ultimately Supergirl undercut even low industry expectations and is currently estimated to top out at around $130 million worldwide - a disastrous figure that leaves it posting a loss of close to $200 million for Warner Bros.
And while some may not have expected it to perform quite this badly, it was clear as day that Supergirl's oversized budget left it unlikely to recoup its costs.
