20 Recent Box Office Flops Everyone Saw Coming
18. Mercy
Perhaps no film in recent years has been a more blatant "January dump" than Mercy - a Chris Pratt and Rebecca Ferguson-starring sci-fi thriller which was quietly sloughed into cinemas at the start of the year with basically zero fanfare.
From its chintzy AI-centric narrative to the fact that Pratt and Ferguson were seemingly never in the same physical space during filming, this had all the makings of a low-rent, high-budget dud that was being sent out to die - all the more so given that director Timur Bekmambetov hasn't had a hit since Wanted way back in 2008.
With violent storms closing hundreds of cinemas in North America on release weekend, terrible reviews, and a hefty $60 million budget only making its climb to profitability even more arduous, Mercy topped out at an abysmal $54.6 million worldwide and then vanished into the pop-culture ether in a mere matter of weeks.
