19. 28 Years Later: Bone Temple

The moment that the end credits rolled on last year's 28 Years Later, many suspected that the consecutively-shot follow-up, 28 Years Later: Bone Temple, might pay for the "sins" of its intentionally polarising ending, and they sure were right.

Though 28 Years Later grossed an impressive $151.3 million against a $60 million budget, seemingly guaranteeing the franchise's rejuvenation, The Bone Temple failed to replicate this success, topping out at a brutally disappointing $58.5 million, in turn failing to even fully recoup its price tag.

This colossal sequel drop can be attributed to not only the previous film's audience-alienating finale but also the decision to release The Bone Temple less than seven months after its predecessor, alongside marketing that failed to sufficiently distinguish it.

And so, the status of a third, Cillian Murphy-starring 28 Years Later film remains somewhat up in the air at present, with Sony presumably mulling over whether it's actually still worth their while.
