20 Recent Box Office Flops Everyone Saw Coming

13. Moana

Even though Disney's live-action remakes of their classic animated films have generally performed incredibly well at the box office, it was easy to be skeptical about the prospects of the recent Moana remake for one big reason - the original movie is still so damn recent.

The animated Moana was released in just 2016, ensuring that many simply felt there was little "necessity" in a remake, especially one that appeared to basically be rehashing the original film shot-for-shot.

The marketing also made it clear to many that this would be yet another remake that stripped away the colour and visual splendour of the source material in favour of a washed-out, "realistic" aesthetic, which audiences appear to be growing fatigued of.

Then there's the fact that it released within spitting distance of two far better-received animated films, Toy Story 5 and Minions and Monsters, ensuring there was little oxygen left for Moana - all the more so once the negative reviews came tumbling in.

Following a disastrous opening weekend, Moana is expected to lose Disney $100-125 million - an outcome that anyone who's paying attention saw coming miles away.
