12. Deep Water

Deep Water is a new survival horror-thriller from Renny Harlin, and while it's tough to expect much from a filmmaker who's spent the last few years of his creative life running The Strangers franchise into the ground, his new film at least seems to be playing to his strengths.

As generic as the title is, Deep Water's big, juicy hook is that it's basically two disaster movies rolled into one - the story begins with a plane making an emergency landing on water, only for the crew and passengers to realise they've landed in shark-infested territory.

It's a fun vehicle for Harlin, who has prior experience delivering both an imperiled-airplane thriller in Die Hard 2: Die Harder, and also a killer shark movie in Deep Blue Sea.

Though Harlin's post-Deep Blue Sea career is littered with dud after dud, this could very well be just the fine-tuned genre romp that reminds everyone why he was one of the most prominent blockbuster hitmakers of the 1990s. Here's hoping, anyway.
