The Rumour:

In the lead up to the release of Mortal Kombat II this past May, many among the fandom became convinced that the late, great Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa - who played villain Shang Tsung in not only the original 1995 film but also the 2019 video game Mortal Kombat 11 - would make a cameo appearance in some capacity.

Though Tagawa passed away last December, Mortal Kombat II wrapped shooting all the way back in early 2024, leaving fans hopeful that the iconic actor might rock up for a cameo, whether as an alt-universe Shang Tsung or an entirely new character.

The Truth:

Fun though this could've been, Tagawa did not appear in the sequel at all.

Considering this rebooted property is very much its own thing and dragging in legacy cast members from other versions just risks making things messy and confusing - especially with multiverses having gone out of style as of late - it was probably for the best.
