Everyone probably knew instinctively that Moody was not going to survive the series; he faced death so often that it was honestly just a matter of time. But it's cruelly ironic that after being an Auror for so long and fighting dark wizards of every shape and size, he gets brought down solely because Mundungus Fletcher wussed out and abandoned him during the Battle of the Seven Potters. But what really hurts is that he doesn't even get a proper death sequence on screen - we just hear about it. The death of one of the wizarding world's greatest heroes, and it's given barely more than a passing mention. People literally mourned more for George's ear than they did for poor Mad-Eye Moody. That is not how he was meant to go.
