19. The Last Duel

Much like West Side Story, The Last Duel received a hefty delay to ensure it maintained its awards chances.

One of two planned Ridley Scott movies this year - though it's looking increasingly likely his Gucci biopic will slide to 2022 - this historical thriller takes place in 14th century France, as Jean de Carrouges (Matt Damon) and Jacques Le Gris (Adam Driver) are ordered to fight to the death after the former accuses the latter of raping his wife (Jodie Comer).

In an odd spot of casting, Ben Affleck will also appear as King Charles VI, yet the sheer emotional power of the tale, in all of its haunting ambiguity, should hopefully draw audiences in regardless.
