8 Famous Movie Scenes That Were Hell To Film

3. The Opening Battle Scene - The Revenant

Everyone involved in The Revenant's production felt like they had been mauled by that bear which attacked Leonardo DiCaprio's character afterwards. Alejandro Inarritu shot his revenge epic under subzero conditions in remote and unforgiving parts of Canada, Argentina and the United States.

Virtually every scene of the movie was hell to shoot on some level, but its opening battle was particularly problematic. The scene was originally scripted as a showdown between 30 trappers and roughly as many Native Americans, but Inarritu decided to expand it to include 200 participants at the last minute.

Life was already difficult for The Revenant's crew, given that they were forced to lug frequently-malfunctioning equipment across miles of wilderness each day, and with little time to prepare for the beefed-up set piece, many of them quit.

Allegations that an extra was hurt during this scene while being dragged butt-naked across the ground by a horse don't do it any favours, though Inarritu has denied the actor suffered any injuries and insists health and safety standards were high during the shoot.

The fim-maker said on the set: "If everybody is having a good time, most likely the film will be a piece of s**t". Surely if that was strictly true, The Revenant would have been the greatest movie of all time.
