8 Famous Movie Scenes That Were Hell To Film
2. The Zero-G Scenes - Apollo 13
Nobody can knock Ron Howard for his attention to detail when filming Apollo 13. The movie's zero-gravity shots were actually filmed in zero gravity, onboard a plane NASA uses to prepare astronauts for weightless environments.
Dubbed the 'Vomit Comet', the aircraft cruises to high altitude before performing a steep dive, creating a weightless environment for 25 seconds. That's the window the cast and crew had to work with, and that meant enduring 60 to 80 of these dives a day. Keep in mind that the 'Vomit Comet' lives up to its name.
It took Howard and his team a good while to perfect shooting in such a challenging environment. The actors were floating everywhere, the cameras were floating, the cameramen were floating. Even Howard was floating in an out of each shot. But after 612 takes, they had four hours of zero-g footage to pick out the best bits from.
