8 Films That Destroyed Your Childhood

7. Showgirls

OK, so this is probably a cheat. Of course this would scar you if you saw it as a kid, but please, let me explain. A great part of late childhood, say around the 10-12-year-old mark, is waiting until your parents are asleep in the dead of night and watch films they considered forbidden. Most of the time this was awesome, and this is the way I discovered such gems as Mortal Kombat and Van Damme€™s Bloodsport, amazing films that should inform all childhoods. Yet there was always the chance that you would stumble on something adult, something you clearly weren€™t ready for. For those of you without movie-savvy parents, you probably ended up in the awkward purgatory of watching a sex scene with them. You€™d ask them what was going on, and they€™d explain that the man and the woman were fighting, and the man was clearly winning. Then they€™d change the channel, and that was that. Yet in the forbidden time, all bets were off €“ you€™re effectively playing roulette with your childhood dreams, and you can bet you€™ve lost the game if you draw Showgirls. It€™s on late at night for good reason, but you were naturally drawn in by the 18 rating. What you saw in there couldn€™t be unseen €“ namely, wall-to-wall nudity and people rutting on each other with aplomb. It was just so grim, so graphic, and so utterly disturbing that you came away scarred, your outlook changed forever. There€™s a reason most entertainment systems have age restrictions, and Showgirls was that reason. A lot of people saw that film before they should have, and a lot of 11-year-old's souls were damaged beyond repair.
