2. Mad Max: Fury Road

This might be a slightly controversial entry, but no matter what way you slice it Imperator Furiosa is the lead character of Fury Road. While Max is still an important part it’s Furiosa who sets the plot in motion, it’s her emotional arc we follow and in many ways, Charlize Theron just dominates the movie.

The movie is Furiosa’s redemption and revenge; after years of being a slave to Immortan Joe she fights back and destroys his empire. Even Max eventually has to bow to her awesomeness, when he reluctantly hands over a sniper rifle so she can take an all important shot for him.

Examining the series Max played a similar role in The Road Warrior and Beyond Thunderdome; that of a mystical lone warrior who helps out a group in need, and then moves on. While Tom Hardy was a more than worthy successor to Mel Gibson, there’s no denying Theron kind of drove away with the movie.
