There was a time, somewhere around the early 2000s when Dwayne Johnston, still calling himself The Rock, wasn't a big draw for movies. His stint as The Scorpion King and The Tooth Fairy didn't win him much praise, but how the tables have turned just a decade later as he is one of the biggest names to sell any movie coming out of Hollywood.
That isn't to say he can't still appear in below average movies. And critics were already gearing up with their animal or oversized puns to write in their non-plus reviews. The critics didn't have much to stand on, as most of their criticism seemed to go nowhere and never offered any viable reason to dislike such a film. Thankfully, the audience scores fought back against the naysayers.
Dwayne Johnston's devoted fan base was already behind him to defend the film, but even the not-so-hardcore fans rallied to his side, and while the critics might turn their nose at a The Rock & King Kong mashup, it's just what the doctor ordered for most moviegoers. After a long day, who doesn't want to see a giant gorilla fight an overgrown warthog-alligator hybrid?
