It might be safe to say that nobody was expecting Venom to crush it at the box office and meet MCU levels of profit and applause. Even though the character is part of the Marvel family, a film with the character that's not in the MCU doesn't carry the same gusto or weight other comic book films do.

Critics had a lot to pull apart with the Venom film. The character itself was one that if they were unfamiliar, it would be difficult to dissect. Read a number of the reviews, and while Tom Hardy's performance is praised, the rest of the film doesn't land.

The character of Venom is a giant, hulking, dark creature that should be viewed in all his might but most of the film's action sequences take place at night. The villain's motivations are flaky at best, and all the while the comparison to the MCU is thrown up.

The audience, however, are a lot more loving and forgiving. I suppose comic book fans rallied behind it the way they did for Justice League, and what you see is admiration for Tom Hardy and Riz Ahmed, love for the violence and gore, and glee for the character of Venom and how he is perceived.
