The current trend for Marvel, in order to prevent people from getting bored of the slew of superhero movies they and other studios have planned for the next century or so, is to create movies that heavily use elements of other genres within the confines of a comic-book movie.

Ergo, Captain America: The Winter Solider was a 70s political conspiracy thriller cum superhero movie, and Guardians of the Galaxy was a big ol€™ space opera within the comic world. Ant-Man has been billed very much as a heist movie, and while that does ring true, you could also make the case for it being a flat-out comedy. Its director, writer and star are all best known for their comedic work, and it€™s the most laugh-out-loud funny Marvel movie to date.

Throughout the movie there€™s a huge number of one-liners that€™ll make you choke on your popcorn, generally delivered in superb deadpan fashion by Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas, while there€™s a slightly more madcap air brought to proceedings by Michael Peña, and some fantastic montage moments.

There are lots of physical sequences as well that play for big laughs; you€™ve all seen the Thomas the Tank scene from the trailer, but that€™s far from the only example of this kind of comedy, and it€™s a credit to everyone involved - and that probably goes back to Wright and Cornish as well - that the jokes continue to feel fresh throughout.
