While Ant-Man does tie into the MCU, and as mentioned does so in a way that fits in with the context and tone of the film, even better is the fact that this still manages to feel like its own film, with a lot of freedom to do and be its own thing.

The story is largely self-contained, with the events and threat being confined to the characters that we are watching over the course of the two hours, without thinking about what€™s happening elsewhere or the fact that the Avengers are going to need to turn up to help save the day.

In that regard it is a lot like a Phase One Marvel movie, with the most obvious comparison being the first Iron Man film, and it€™s probably a fair one in terms of both story and quality. With so much going on in the Marvel universe, it makes for a refreshing change to watch a film from it that is mostly just concerned with what€™s happening in its own small world.
