4. Man On Fire

Man On Fire tells the story of a suicidal ex-soldier who finds a new lease on life when he becomes the bodyguard to a young girl; when she gets kidnapped he does not take it well.

The Original: Tony Scott was originally attached to direct the 1987 version – which was based on a bestselling book – but the studio felt he wasn’t experienced enough. Sadly this first take was a crushing bore, with stilted dialogue, no action and a deathly slow pace.

Not even a talented cast (Scott Glenn, Joe Pesci, Jonathan Pryce) could rescue it.

The Remake: Scott came back onboard for the 2004 remake, and gave it a proper boot up the a***. Denzel Washington was perfectly cast, the action and pacing were relentless and crucially - this version featured the emotional connection between the bodyguard and the girl that was sorely lacking in the first attempt.
