9 Iconic Comic Book Storylines That Sucked In Movies

4. Spawn's Origin - Spawn

Todd McFarlane has never been one of the great storytellers of our time, but when he created Spawn he was really at the peak of his powers. This gothic, beautifully drawn comic features an assassin making a deal with the devil so he can see his family again, and boy oh boy does he come to regret that bargain.

The 1997 movie sticks surprisingly close to the comic’s origins in many ways; most of the key characters are present and events play out in similar ways. The issue with Spawn is that it’s a comic book movie made in the nineties, meaning the studio didn’t have a f***ing clue how to handle it properly. It tones down the horror and violence to appeal to teens, has a horribly dated rock soundtrack and some of the worst CGI to ever grace the big screen.

What's worse is that HBO made an animated Spawn series around the same time, and it did a much better job of telling the same basic storyline.
