9 Iconic Comic Book Storylines That Sucked In Movies
2. The Death Of Superman - Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice
Legend has it the idea for The Death Of Superman storyline came from a joke in a writer’s room when they couldn’t think of any decent ideas, but it slowly gained popularity because the team felt the world took Superman for granted; it would be interesting to show a world where Superman - a shining beacon of hope and decency - was cruelly snatched away.
Thus they created Doomsday to be his assassin and crafted the epic story where they fight each other to the death. The impact of this story was huge and remains one of the most famous arcs from the comic. Of course, a movie version was planned for years, with Tim Burton’s Superman Lives being the most famous failed attempt.
Cut to 2016 and the whole story is awkwardly crammed into the last twenty minutes of Dawn Of Justice, where Superman pointlessly sacrifices himself to stop a CGI cave troll. This storyline deserved an entire movie of its own, and it fails because Henry Cavill’s glowering Superman is as far from a beacon of hope as you could possibly get, making his demise rather hollow.
