9. Best Film Editing

WINNER: La La Land

This is another fiercely-contested category, but La La Land's pulsing energy is so indebted to Tom Cross's rhythmic editing, which shouldn't be too surprising considering Cross took home the Best Editing Oscar two years ago for his sublime work on Chazelle's Whiplash.

Cross' punchy work helps the various set-pieces become infectiously enjoyable almost immediately, but he also does a fantastic job with the slower, more deliberate dramatic exchanges between Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone's protagonists.

Expect Cross to be a frequent winner in this category over the next few years, especially if he keeps teaming with Chazelle.
