The events of 9/11 had a direct impact on both the final edit and marketing campaign of Andrew Davis' revenge thriller; the movie's release date was postponed from October 2001 to February 2002 as the studio hurriedly altered the movie, removing a scene of a plane being hijacked amongst other things. However, no amount of changes could have turned Collateral Damage into anything good, and the movie tanked at the box office, failing to earn back the $85m budget. As fireman-turned-vigilante Gordy Brewer, Schwarzenegger is required to do a little bit more acting than is usually required from him in the action genre, but suffers in a movie where the plot is entirely formulaic and predictable. The poor critical and commercial reception to the movie marked another disappointment in the Austrian Oak's career, with many predicting that his time as an action hero was nearing its end.
