BAFTAs 2019: 6 Ups & 8 Downs

5. Rachel Weisz Wins Best Supporting Actress

BAFTA & BBC

Despite being nominated for Best Supporting Actress awards left and right this season for her sublime work in The Favourite, Rachel Weisz has been a bit of a muted presence on the circuit, if only because she's spent the last few months competing against her co-star and fellow nominee, Emma Stone.

With Stone being a red-hot on-the-rise actress, she's stolen the lion's share of the awards hype and headlines away from Weisz, so it was nice to see the Brit actress actually win the award in this case.

You can certainly argue this was another case of BAFTA's British bias in play, but given that Weisz's character had the more intriguing and unexpected arc of the two characters, her victory here felt both thoroughly justified and immensely satisfying.
