Batgirl: Warner Bros. Want Kristen Stewart To Play Barbara Gordon?
But don't expect an appearance in Birds of Prey.
Even though it looks like Barbara Gordon won't be appearing in Birds of Prey (for reasons that'll never make sense), her solo film is still very much being developed. Bumblebee scribe Christina Hodson is penning the script, having also done the same for the aforementioned Harley Quinn-superhero spin-off, and now it looks as though the project could be moving a step closer to production with Warner Bros. having developed a shortlist of actresses to play the titular role.
According to DanielRPK (a Twitter user who's broke many stories surrounding the DCEU/Worlds of DC franchise), WB are looking at Kristen Stewart - or a "Kristen Stewart prototype" at the least - to play Barbara Gordon in the upcoming feature. RPK doesn't go into further detail surrounding their source, or even what a Stewart-esque casting could be, but they do believe that the studio are keen on casting the former Twilight star as the first Batgirl, stating that "they really want her to play Babs."
Though Stewart's casting in the part would've probably raised a few eyebrows a decade or so ago, the actor has only gone from strength to strength in recent years. Performances in Personal Shopper and On the Road intimated her talents particularly well, and though a return to a franchise would look like an unlikely step at this stage in her career, it's a casting that would get a lot of people - fans of Stewart's recent films in particular - very excited indeed.
As for the Batgirl movie itself, a release date still hasn't been revealed. The project was delayed following Joss Whedon's departure the other year, and with the character unlikely to feature in Birds of Prey too, fans will have to wait a while for Babs to hit the big screen.
