From the moment that first Batman v Superman emblem was revealed inside Hall H at San Diego Comic Con 2013, the Man of Steel has taken a backseat to The Dark Knight. Superman, despite Man of Steels naysayers, had just made an overall successful comeback only to have his rebooted franchise butted in on by the Caped Crusader. This is what happens when you dont make the billion dollars the studio (wrongfully) expects. The vast majority of Batman v Superman coverage has focused on the character that got top billing. Superman hasnt even been the second most relevant character in news related to the film. Wonder Woman has that spot and if Supermans not careful, Aquaman is going to sneak up and snag the bronze medal. That Batman has received more attention than Superman is as unsurprising as it is understandable. Years of animated and cinematic success have allowed Batman to eclipse Supermans mainstream popularity. Also, Superman is the one thing about Batman v Superman that isnt new. Ben Affleck is a new Batman, Jesse Eisenberg is a new Lex Luthor, Gal Gadot is the first feature film Wonder Woman and the same can allegedly be said of Jason Momoa as Aquaman. As the films best-known commodity, Henry Cavills Superman just isnt newsworthy. All of that is fine. Media coverage wont matter all that much on March 25, 2016. The concern is whether Supermans spotlight has been equally dimmed in the creative decisions made for this film. Will Warner Bros. take the easy way out and tell a more Batman-centric story that the studio assumes audiences will more readily eat up? Hopefully not, as it would be bad business to lose sight of a central character in a film like Batman v Superman, which is being counted on to launch an entire cinematic universe.
