20 Greatest Horror Movie Opening Scenes of the 2020s (So Far)
7. Teenage Sex & Death at Camp Miasma
Jane Schoenbrun's new film Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma is a giddy slasher satire that starts with one hell of an inspired opening credits sequence - a montage detailing the storied history of the in-universe slasher franchise Camp Miasma.
After witnessing the franchise's iconic villain, Little Death (Jack Haven), carry out a few grisly kills, we're treated to an incredible travelogue of Camp Miasma's ups and downs.
From its early success in the 1980s to the glut of increasingly ridiculous sequels which of course diminished the franchise's stock, this is all clearly nodding to the Friday the 13th franchise in particular.
And finally, the montage ends with a collection of online retrospective articles re-evaluating the original film's transphobic premise - obviously a reference to Sleepaway Camp.
It's clear that an absolutely mind-boggling amount of work went into creating all the faux-articles, VHS covers, and pieces of merchandise for the montage, but collectively they do a masterful job of instantly immersing us in the world of this fictional horror IP.
