20 Greatest Horror Movie Opening Scenes of the 2020s (So Far)
6. Thanksgiving
Not content to merely be a seasonal slasher flick, Eli Roth's Thanksgiving also endeavoured to satirise the most ridiculous aspects of the holiday - especially how Black Friday turns even apparently sane people into absolute psychopaths.
This is cemented in the very first scene, where a mob of angry shoppers are waiting for superstore RightMart to open so they can grab those tasty Black Friday deals.
The mob eventually runs up to the locked front door, and a crowd-crush situation causes the door's windows to shatter, the mob now violently pouring into the store where all sense of order is lost.
Staff members are trampled, customers beat the hell out of each other for goods, and the manager's wife Amanda (Gina Gershon) is brutally killed when her head is rammed with a shopping trolley, scalping her in the process.
This scene perfectly established everything that Roth's movie is - queasily violent, grimly hilarious, and extremely sceptical of what Thanksgiving has become.
