10 Best Horror Movies Of 2026 (So Far)

5. We Bury The Dead

Generally speaking, if you watch a movie with zombies in it, you can reasonably expect that much of the story and the screen time will be dedicated to them. Why else would such monsters be included if not to be the focal point of the entire thing?

In early 2026, however, We Bury the Dead subverted such expectations. The story that saw Daisy Ridley's Ava in search of her husband through Tasmania, ground zero for an incident that killed 500,000 people and turned some to zombies, gave said zombies a back seat.

Largely lethargic and slow enough for them to be killed off without much jeopardy, the story very much focused on Ava's journey and the emotions brought with it. Of course there were some scares from the undead, but these were few and far between, with the movie instead raising questions of morality and mortality over cheap shocks and gratuitous violence.

Unfortunately, the film suffered from poor marketing, as potential audiences were misled into believing this would be a more typical zombie flick, but what was actually produced was something that went far deeper, and was far stronger for it.
