13. All That's Left Of You

There have been few films released this year as difficult but necessary as All That's Left of You, Cherin Dabis's epic family saga about a Palestinian family's struggles, joys, and conflicts from 1948 to the present day. 

Taking the form of a history lesson as well as an unsparingly intimate portrayal of a family in crisis, the film deals with a wide range of difficult topics, from occupation to war, faith to justice, and tackles every angle with empathy to spare. 

It would be easy to consider All That's Left of You a vehicle for melodrama and trauma given its subject, but the big surprise here - though it's not without its hardships - is how hopeful it can be, painting its central family as not only embattled, but loving, loved, and wonderfully human.

Urgent and arresting, Dabis's gem is both huge and intimate in equal measure, and begs to be seen.
