12. Is God Is

A sublime vehicle for its impressive all-star cast - led by Kara Young, Mallori Johnson, Sterling K. Brown, and Janelle Monae - Is God Is comes alive as a revenge thriller unlike any other. 

Following a pair of sisters (Young and Johnson) as they seek vengeance against their abusive father (a callous and commanding Brown), Aleshea Harris's adaptation of her own play is visually gorgeous and viscerally heartbreaking, as its central characters tumble down a path that threatens to doom them. 

And despite it being so action-heavy and electrifyingly crafted, Is God Is is also impressively philosophical, even wise, about its characters' choices, bringing a tense complexity to everything they do to seek peace from their tormenter.

It's also (shockingly) very funny, a difficult tone to take at times that its cast nonetheless make look easy. Not for the faint-hearted, sure, but a unique vision of revenge you have to see to believe.
