From Steven Soderbergh, the unconventional mind behind such modern classics as the Ocean's trilogy, Traffic, and Erin Brokovich, comes one of the year's most surprisingly moving and brilliantly pitch-black funny gems. 

Following an ageing artist (a wonderful Ian McKellen) who is aided to create one last painting by a new assistant (Michaela Coel) with conflicting motivations, The Christophers sports a wickedly twisted premise that allows for plenty of heart and frank discussions of art and creation, but also heaps of betrayal.

Dark and thrilling, Soderbergh's latest probes the minds of artists and opportunists who want to create, be remembered, or simply make a quick dime, and does so without ever being showy, overbearing, or too bleak to take away from the humanity at its centre.

With McKellen and Coel's chemistry guiding things forward, The Christophers might just go down as 2026's most underrated masterstroke, another jewel in its director's already bedazzled crown.
