20 Awesome Horror Movies NOBODY Talks About

16. The Hunger

Quite how a vampire film starring David Bowie, Susan Sarandon, and Catherine Deneuve has kept such a low profile over more than 40 years is anyone's guess, but The Hunger remains one of the most sumptuous and sexy movies of its kind ever made.

Directed with eye-wateringly beautiful style by Tony Scott, this tale of the love triangle between a vampire (Deneuve), her companion (Bowie), and a doctor (Sarandon) matches its striking style with a deeply felt story of the toils of ageing and the agony of "eternal" life.

Critics at the time of its release called The Hunger style over substance, but can style not be substance?

As a mood exercise, this is basically faultless work, but it's also a far more affecting and meaningful character piece than many detractors give it credit for, aided of course by three exemplary lead performances.

And if that's not enough, it's also got an early cameo from a young Willem Dafoe and an absolutely kickass appearance from English goth-rock band Bauhaus in the opening sequence.
