20 Awesome Horror Movies NOBODY Talks About

15. Maniac

A lot of dyed-in-the-wool horror fans turned their nose up at 2012's remake of William Lustig's infamous 1980 slasher Maniac, and in fairness, the original is such a singularly scuzzy, makes-you-want-to-shower piece of exploitation cinema that many assumed a modern take would simply gloss it up too much.

And though this Elijah Wood-starring remake is a far slicker beast, it also brings with it one hell of a gimmick that works shockingly well, with most of the film taking place from the POV of Wood's serial killer antagonist.

This lends Maniac 2012 a distinctly horrifying aesthetic like few other similar films, while elevated by Wood's sublimely unnerving performance, oodles of nauseating gore, and a fantastic synth score from Rob.

While it unsurprisingly flopped at the box office, it's more shocking that Maniac still hasn't really found its audience, no matter that it's one of the most visionary horror films of the last 15 years.
