20 Great Performances Wasted In Terrible Horror Movies
16. Richard Roxburgh - Van Helsing
Van Helsing impressively manages to look obscenely expensive and hilariously cheap at the same time.
As appealing as the prospect of Hugh Jackman playing a kick-ass monster hunter is, this is an unintentionally comical rollercoaster ride of a movie defined by some of the most shambolic CGI excess of any film released in the 2000s - which is really saying something.
But Richard Roxburgh must simply take a bow, because his turn as Dracula is as ludicrously entertaining as the movie ever gets.
For one, the guy oozes screen presence from his every pore, enough that he even makes Jackman's Van Helsing seem a bit dull by comparison.
But beyond that. he leans fully into over-the-top theatrics such that, with a more robust film surrounding him, his work would've probably entered the annals of all-time great Dracula performances.
As it stands it's still sublimely entertaining, even if you've got to sit through the entire movie for it.
