4. The Caitlyn Twist - The Hand That Rocks the Cradle

Nobody was out here begging for a remake of '90s thriller classic The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, because beyond being such a thorough product of its time, this junky genre offering was topped by an unbeatable performance from Rebecca De Mornay as its scorned antagonist.

And while the recent, direct-to-streaming remake did at least rock two well-matched leads in Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Maika Monroe - the latter taking up De Mornay's unhinged part - in every way that mattered this was a more sanitised and way less fun take on the original.

It offers just one interesting new wrinkle, by revealing that years earlier, Winstead's protagonist Caitlyn killed Polly's (Monroe) parents and infant sister by setting her house on fire.

Caitlyn did it to get away from Polly's father, who abused both of them, and while Caitlyn was given a new identity, a traumatised Polly spent years in awful foster homes.

That's certainly a way to make the central scenario more morally thorny than in the original, even if it's mostly wasted on a film that's otherwise a bland stew of half-baked ideas.
