Birds Of Prey: 10 Major New Details Revealed During The Press Tour

6. Why Jared Leto's Joker Is M.I.A.

Set photos popped up online last year showing Harley Quinn breaking up with the Joker as he threw her possessions out of the apartment they shared and, as of right now, we don't actually know whether that's made it into the final cut of Birds of Prey. Either way, a stand-in was used and Jared Leto's Joker definitely won't be making his return.

"It was either going to be a complete Harley and Joker story or Joker has got to be out of the picture," Margot Robbie told Cinema Blend at a press event. "I really wanted to see Harley in a girl gang and I felt there was a huge gap in the market for a girl gang ensemble action film."

She added that "it was a conscious choice of they have to be broken up at this stage. I have a whole backstory in my head [of] what's happened between what you saw at the end of Suicide Squad and what you see at the beginning of Birds of Prey." Unfortunately, it doesn't sound like any of that will actually be included in Birds of Prey based on later remarks from director Cathy Yan.

"I think the movie starts with the breakup," she says, "and then it’s all about Harley and we just wanted to work with that and whatever we needed him to be… just to show that he existed and that there was a breakup, but the focus of the movie is definitely not on The Joker." In other words, Harley is moving on from her abusive past and while that's definitely a good thing, no Joker is going to disappoint a lot of fans.
