Having just filmed leading roles in David O. Russell's next movie The Silver Linings Playbook together, Vulture are reporting Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence are set to re-team on period drama Serena. The film is based on Ron Rash's 2008 novel and centers on George Pemberton (Cooper) and his new bride Serena (Lawrence) attempting to build up a timber empire during the depression-era North Carolina. They are initially successful in their all-consuming business transactions in the mountains but when Serena discovers she can no longer bear children, things go extremely dark and she sets out to take her anger out on George's illegitimate son. Lawrence has the real meaty role in this one with a part compared to the ruthlessness and complexity of William Shakespeare's Lady Macbeth. No wonder then that as recently as two years ago A-lister Angelina Jolie was eyeing the role in an earlier version of this adaptation which at that point would be helmed by Darren Aronofsky. He has since moved on and instead this adaptation will be helmed by Susanne Bier (Things We Lost in the Fire, In A Better World), though we don't know whether they are keeping Chris Kyle's (Alexander, K-9: The Widowmaker) screenplay or whether it has been re-written. Bier has just completed filming on an Italian dramedy with Pierce Brosnan titled All You Need Is Love. Serena is setup at Mark Cuban's 2929 Entertainment. Shooting is set to begin 'soon' and it really would have to be in the spring if it is too shoot this year as Cooper is negotiating a huge $15 million to star in The Hangover Part III this summer.
